Jonathan Evans.- Origins of vowel pharyngealization in Hongyan Qiang
Hongyan, a variety of Northern Qiang (Tibeto-Burman, China) has four plain vowel monophthongs /i, u, !, a/. Vowels may be lengthened, rhotacized, or pharyngealized, resulting in fourteen short and ten long vowel phonemes. No other varieties of Qiang have been described with pharyngealization, although the other suprasegmental effects are common throughout Northern Qiang.

Wang Ming-ke.- Heroic Ancestors and Brotherly Nationalities: Text and Context in Primordial History: Fieldwork among the Qiang minority in western China has led me to discover many indigenous "histories." While sharing the same narrative mode, they attributed the origins of closely bound families or villages in an area to the arrival and subsequent dispersion of brothers in the remote past.
